On Some Stability Properties of Compactified D=11 Supermembranes

    Get PDF
We desribe the minimal configurations of the bosonic membrane potential, when the membrane wraps up in an irreducible way over S1×S1S^{1}\times S^{1}. The membrane 2-dimensional spatial world volume is taken as a Riemann Surface of genus gg with an arbitrary metric over it. All the minimal solutions are obtained and described in terms of 1-forms over an associated U(1) fiber bundle, extending previous results. It is shown that there are no infinite dimensional valleys at the minima.Comment: 12 pages,Latex2e lamuphys, Invited talk at International Seminar "Supersymetry and Quantum Symmetries", Dubn

Putting String/Fivebrane Duality to the Test

According to string/fivebrane duality, the Green-Schwarz factorization of the D=10D=10 spacetime anomaly polynomial I12I_{12} into X4 X8X_4\, X_8 means that just as X4X_4 is the anomaly polynomial of the d=2d=2 string worldsheet so X8X_8 should be the anomaly polynomial of the d=6d=6 fivebrane worldvolume. To test this idea we perform a fivebrane calculation of X8X_8 and find perfect agreement with the string one--loop result.Comment: 14 pages, CERN TH-6614/92, CTP-TAMU 60/9

    N=1 SUPER-P-BRANES in twistor-like Lorentz harmonic formulation

    Get PDF
Unique twistor--like Lorentz harmonic formulation for all N=1 supersymmetric extended objects (super-p-branes) moving in the space--time of arbitrary dimension D (admissible for given pp) are suggested. The equations of motion are derived, explicit form of the \kappa-symmetry transformations is presented and the classical equivalence to the standard formulation is proved. The cases with minimal world--sheet dimensions p=1,2p=1,2, namely of D=10 heterotic string and D=11 supermembrane, are considered in details. In particular, the explicit form of irreducible \kappa-symmetry transformations for D=11 supermembrane is derived.Comment: (revized: minor changes, which was nesessary because previous version cannot be read LATEX byond Padova University), 24 pages, LATEX , DEPD/94/TH/3

On the Stability of Compactified D=11 Supermembranes

We prove D=11 supermembrane theories wrapping around in an irreducible way over S1×S1×M9S^{1} \times S^{1}\times M^{9} on the target manifold, have a hamiltonian with strict minima and without infinite dimensional valleys at the minima for the bosonic sector. The minima occur at monopole connections of an associated U(1) bundle over topologically non trivial Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus. Explicit expressions for the minimal connections in terms of membrane maps are presented. The minimal maps and corresponding connections satisfy the BPS condition with half SUSY.Comment: 15 pages, latex. Added comments in conclusions and more reference

Fractal extra dimension in Kaluza-Klein theory

Kaluza-Klein theory in which the geometry of an additional dimension is fractal has been considered. In such a theory the mass of an elementary electric charge appears to be many orders of magnitude smaller than the Planck mass, and the "tower" of masses which correspond to higher integer charges becomes aperiodic.Comment: 3 pages, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D (submitted on 3.28.2001

Reducing SS- duality to TT- duality

    Get PDF
The infrared limit of D=4,  N=4D=4,~~N=4 Yang-Mills theory with compact gauge group GG compactified on a two-torus is governed by an effective superconformal field theory. We conjecture that this is a certain orbifold involving the maximal torus of GG. Yang-Mills SS-duality makes predictions for all correlators of this effective conformal field theory. These predictions are shown to be implied by the standard TT-duality of the conformal field theory. Consequently, Montonen-Olive duality between electric and magnetic states reduces to the standard two-dimensional duality between momentum and winding states.Comment: 13 pages, harvmac, no figures. On possible generalization of the superstring action to eleven dimensions

We suggest a D=11 super Poincar\'e invariant action for the superstring which has free dynamics in the physical variables sector. Instead of the standard approach based on the searching for an action with local Îș\kappa-symmetry (or, equivalently, with corresponding first class constraints), we propose a theory with fermionic constraints of second class only. Then the Îș\kappa-symmetry and the well known Γ\Gamma-matrix identities are not necessary for the construction. Thus, at the classical level, the superstring action of the type described can exist in any spacetime dimensions and the known brane-scan can be revisited.Comment: 23 pages, RevTex file, to be published in Phys. Linearized gravity as a gauge theory

We discuss linearized gravity from the point of view of a gauge theory. In (3+1)-dimensions our analysis allows to consider linearized gravity in the context of the MacDowell-Mansouri formalism. Our observations may be of particular interest in the strong-weak coupling duality for linearized gravity, in Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario and in Ashtekar formalism.Comment: Latex, 13 page

A systematic review of the overlap of fluid biomarkers in delirium and advanced cancer-related syndromes.

BACKGROUND:Delirium is a serious and distressing neurocognitive disorder of physiological aetiology that is common in advanced cancer. Understanding of delirium pathophysiology is largely hypothetical, with some evidence for involvement of inflammatory systems, neurotransmitter alterations and glucose metabolism. To date, there has been limited empirical consideration of the distinction between delirium pathophysiology and that of the underlying disease, for example, cancer where these mechanisms are also common in advanced cancer syndromes such as pain and fatigue. This systematic review explores biomarker overlap in delirium, specific advanced cancer-related syndromes and prediction of cancer prognosis. METHODS:A systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42017068662) was conducted, using MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, CENTRAL and Web of Science, to identify body fluid biomarkers in delirium, cancer prognosis and advanced cancer-related syndromes of interest. Studies were excluded if they reported delirium tremens only; did not measure delirium using a validated tool; the sample had less than 75% of participants with advanced cancer; measured tissue, genetic or animal biomarkers, or were conducted post-mortem. Articles were screened for inclusion independently by two authors, and data extraction and an in-depth quality assessment conducted by one author, and checked by two others. RESULTS:The 151 included studies were conducted in diverse settings in 32 countries between 1985 and 2017, involving 28130 participants with a mean age of 69.3 years. Seventy-one studies investigated delirium biomarkers, and 80 studies investigated biomarkers of an advanced cancer-related syndrome or cancer prognosis. Overall, 41 biomarkers were studied in relation to both delirium and either an advanced cancer-related syndrome or prognosis; and of these, 24 biomarkers were positively associated with either delirium or advanced cancer syndromes/prognosis in at least one study. The quality assessment showed large inconsistency in reporting. CONCLUSION:There is considerable overlap in the biomarkers in delirium and advanced cancer-related syndromes. Improving the design of delirium biomarker studies and considering appropriate comparator/controls will help to better understanding the discrete pathophysiology of delirium in the context of co-existing illness

String/(D−5)(D-5)-brane Duality and SS Duality as Symmetries of Actions

    Get PDF
We realize the string/(D−5)(D-5)-brane duality on the action level between the T10−DT^{10-D}-compactified heterotic string effective action and the (D−5)(D-5)- brane effective action in DD dimensions by managing a Lagrange multiplier field. A dual dictionary is composed to be available for the translation between the elementary or solitonic solutions of the dual pair of actions. In the same way the SS duality is also reconstructed on the action level as a double dualization for the T6T^6-compactified heterotic string effective action.Comment: 9 pages, latex, no figure
